Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for weighing
   • Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
   • Identify material for despatch or delivery.
   • Identify vehicles delivering or collecting loads; check documents and loads.
   • Check that load height and stability meet site requirements.
2. Weigh and record loads
   • Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
   • Complete weighing operations in line with work order and organisational safety procedures.
   • Identify vehicle gross and tare weights using appropriate weighing equipment.
   • Calculate and record nett weight.
   • Obtain confirmation of delivery and despatch records from driver.
   • Record delivery and despatch documentation and maintain in line with organisational procedures.
3. Direct vehicles for loading and unloading
   • Obtain loading and unloading documentation and check against work order.
   • Identify potential and existing hazards and control risks associated with on-site vehicle movements.
   • Direct vehicles clearly and accurately to loading and unloading areas.
   • Notify despatch and delivery personnel of loading and unloading requirements.
   • Monitor on-site vehicle movements and attend to driver needs as required.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

apply mathematical procedures to calculate load weight and measure dimensions

safely and efficiently implement the correct procedures to weigh loads

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

purpose, features and operation of weighbridges and truck scales

site capacity and compliance requirements for vehicle load height, stability and weight

overall site layout and layout of loading and unloading areas

categories of products or materials received or despatched by the organisation and where these are loaded and unloaded

typical workplace hazards present when weighing loads and during on-site vehicle movement and methods of minimising risks

key features of these varying signal systems used for directing vehicles:
